Welcome to Parkham Parish

Moving south from the sea the parish includes the hamlets and villages of Northway, Horns Cross, Foxdown, Hoops, Newhaven, Goldsworthy, Parkham Ash and Broad Parkham. The parish consists of approximately 930 people and 420 dwellings.

In the heart of Parkham village and a feature seen from miles around, is the church of St James which dates back to Norman times although the only visual sign of this is the archway over the main door. Parkham village is well served by The Bell Inn, Parkham Primary School, G.E.Honey, a very popular family butchers, and Barton Road Garage. Horns Cross has a pub: The Coach and Horses and Robinson's Garage.

Parkham Parish is involved in the membership of two Community Partnerships, namely Torrington Area Advisory Group and the Atlantic Partnership.

The Parish is located in a region designated as Government Assisted. It is also in a Rural Development Area and has European Structural Funding status as well as being a European Leader II area.

Being predominantly agricultural, the recent review of the Common Agricultural Policy has had a major effect on the area.

Average employment income per household is considerably less than the UK average, but overall analysis could be difficult due to the number of retired and self employed people in the Parish. The average working income, however, is one of the lowest in the South West and is 63% of UK average (Source: University of Plymouth; 1995).
