For fans of Enid Blyton’s ‘Malory Towers’ Hartland Abbey IS ‘Malory Towers’ with Series 5 just released in June 2024 on BBC IPlayer and CBBC. Followers of Darrell Rivers and Gwendoline Mary Lacey and their friends will be able to see them in the familiar surroundings of the Abbey and gardens again.
Hartland Abbey is the cherished home of the Stucley family with treasures and memorabilia collected over many generations. Visitors can wander through the house at will or, for groups, conducted tours are available by prior booking.
Northam Burrows Country Park lies at the western edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, forming an integral part of North Devon's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with about 253 hectares of grassy coastal plain with salt marsh, sand dunes and generally unimproved grasslands.
Hartland Quay, perched on the rugged Atlantic coast of Devon, is a captivating spot that combines natural beauty with historic intrigue. The towering cliffs rise 350 feet above sea level, creating a dramatic backdrop. From here, you can gaze southwrds towards the Cornish coast, spotting Tintagel and beyond, or look northward towards the treacherous Hartland Point. The beach is a mix of pebbles, rocks and occassional sandy patch. Hartland Quay was once a bustling harbour, today it is a peaceful escape. A place to unwind, enjoy a meal at The Wreckers Retreat Bar and take in the views. The Shiwreck Museum sheds light on the wrecks that occured along this treacherous coast.
Peppercombe Beach, located on the North Devon Coast a few miles east of Clovelly and Bucks Mill, offers a unique coastal experience. Peppercombe Beach has a rocky foreshore with red sandstone cliffs and a steep wooded hillside.
Tapeley House and Gardens are located in the parish of Westliegh near the picturesque village of Instow. It is a delightful estate sit high on a hill overlooking the River Torridge and the North Devon coatline. It has been home to the Christie for two centuries. Hector Christie is currently oversees the estate that is rich in history. The formal terraced garden, designed by Sir John Belcher in the early 20th century, is a highlight. Additionally, there are a mid-19th century pleasure grounds and lake set within parkland of 18th century origins.
